CFO of Life - The spoon theory

Spoon TheoryEnergy Management

I treat my energy like an accounting system. Some people call it the "Spoon Theory"—the idea that you start the day with a set number of spoons, and every single action, from showering to scrolling, costs you one. When you're out of spoons, you're done. But for me, it's not just a metaphor; it's a functional budget.

After 20 years with Fibromyalgia and Colitis, I've stopped looking for a magic cure. There isn't one. Nothing is coming to save you but yourself.

Once you accept that, you can stop being a victim of your symptoms and start being a manager of your energy. And when this comes, there are maaaany caveats. For example:

You were invited somewhere:  You think: "Going to lunch takes 2 spoons." Wrong. You forgot the travel tax. Getting there takes spoons. Getting dressed takes spoons. The noise of the room takes spoons.

Don't feel bad if you're not a great CFO.

I've been doing this for two decades and I'm still not 80% accurate with my spoons. You won't be either. The goal isn't to be perfect, but to be mindful of how we spend our energy.

People spend years chasing a "solution," which is a massive waste of mental effort. You have to go through it. Be really sure there isn't a cure coming to save you, only yourself.

When you get that, tools of how to manage your energy, like this, are very helpful 🙂

Time passes anyway. You might as well be the one deciding how to spend it!
